Introduction

The Automotive Technician Program is designed to meet the needs of students who want to start a career in the automotive industry. It will prepare students for entry level employment as an automotive technician, while processing the skills and knowledge to quickly progress to a fully productive technician. Automotive repair facilities are looking for trained technicians, as vehicles are becoming more advanced every year. The Automotive Technician Program training will crossover to many different aspects of the automotive industry, including Parts Manager, Service Manager, and Service Advisor.

Description

The Automotive Technician Program is a career studies certificate program and consists of 36 credit hours over the course of three 8 week sessions. The Curriculum is geared towards repair, maintenance, and diagnostics of passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, and light duty trucks. Heavy emphasis is placed on electronic diagnostic tools that are required to service and repair modern computerized automotive systems, such as electronic fuel injection, transmission controls, anti-lock braking, stability control, and theft systems.

Location and Cost

Located in south central Virginia approximately 50 miles south of Richmond. Quiet rural setting. Approximately two miles from Blackstone. Classes will be held at 1041 West 10th Street, Pickett Park, Fort Pickett, Blackstone, VA in Nottoway County.

Lodging is available at Fort Pickett. Daily rates are available. Rates may vary slightly. Meals available on Post and nearby Blackstone. On base lodging is provided based on availability. Reserve your space!

Training program is divided into 3 eight week sessions. Students are given a 2 week break at the end of each session.

All of us know that today's vehicles and technicians are overwhelmed with electronics.  We do our very best here at SVCC ATP to make sure that electric/electronic training continues to be our number one priority. All major components on today's vehicles are managed or run by electronics. From classroom basics, simulator, software training, scan tool and scope we are prepared to provide our students with the best of the best in training.

AUT1

8 Weeks - April 9-May 31, 2012 and November 5, 2012-January 11, 2013

                           

AUT 195, Microcomputers for Automotive Technicians (1CR)

Teaches fundamental skills of computer operation. Examines hardware (processor, keyboard, disk drives, and printers) and operating systems. Learn to diagnose equipment using numerous scan tools, order parts, fill out work orders and store information for future testing. Training on palm, laptop, and various makes of scan tools.

AUT 178, Automotive Final Drive and Manual Transmission Systems (4 CR)

Presents the operation, design, construction and repair of manual transmissions and final drive systems, for both front and rear drive vehicles, including clutches, synchronizers, torque multiplication/gear reduction, along with differentials, transmission/transaxles, drive axles, U-joints, CV Joints, 4-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems.

AUT 265, Automotive Braking Systems (4 CR)

Presents Operation, design, repair, and servicing of braking systems, including antilock brake systems (ABS). Explains uses of tools and test equipment, evaluation of test results, estimation of repair cost for power, standard, and disc brakes.

AUT 121, Automotive Fuel Systems I (3 CR)

Analyses major domestic and foreign automotive fuel systems to include carburetors and fuel injection systems. Includes detailed inspection and discussion of fuel tanks, connecting lines, instruments, filters, fuel pumps, superchargers and turbo charger. Also includes complete diagnosis, troubleshooting, overhaul and factor adjustment procedures of all major carbureted and fuel injection systems.

AUT 112, Automotive Engines II (3 CR)

Presents analysis of power, cylinder condition, valves and bearings in the automotive engine to establish the present condition, repairs or adjustments. Part II.

AUT 241, Automotive Electricity I (4CR)

Introduces electricity and magnetism, symbols and circuitry as applied to the alternators, regulator, starters, lighting systems, instruments and gauges and accessories.

AUT111, Automotive Engines I (3CR)

Presents analysis of power, cylinder condition, valves and bearing in the automotive engine to establish the present condition, repairs or adjustments. Part I.

  AUT 156, Small Gasoline Engines (2CR)

Studies small gasoline engine operating principles, construction, design, variety, and their many purposes. Gives instruction on two cycle and four cycle gas and diesel engines, their construction, design, fuel system, ignition system and lubricating systems. Demonstrates disassembly, reconditioning, overhaul and reassembly in the lab.

8 Weeks - January 30-March 22, 2012 and August 27-october 18, 2012

AUT 130, Introduction to Auto Mechanics (3CR)

Introduces auto mechanics, covering auto shop safety, tool identification and use. Explains automotive system theory and function. Stresses quality work practices and job opportunities.

AUT 242, Automotive Electricity II (4CR)

Introduces electricity and magnetism, symbols and circuitry as applied to the alternators, regulators, starters, lighting systems, instruments and gauges and accessories.

AUT 100, Introduction to Automotive Shop Practices (2CR)

Introduces shop practices for automotive laboratory and shop safety, identification and use of hand tools, general power equipment and maintenance of automotive shop. Explains basic operation procedures of standard shop equipment. Presents Occupational Safety and Health Act standards pertaining to the automotive field.

AUT 267, Automotive Suspension and Braking Systems (3CR)

Presents the operation, design, construction, repair and servicing of braking and suspension systems. Explains use of tools and test equipment, evaluation of test results, estimation and repair cost, front and rear suspension alignment, power and standard steering, and power, standard, and disc brakes.
