Practical Nursing Program

The major in practical nursing is designed to prepare selected individuals to be members of the nursing care team providing direct patient care in a variety of health service agencies. Upon successful completion of the program the student will be able to perform the duties of a Practical Nurse with competence; be eligible to apply for the state Practical Nurse Licensure examination; acknowledge the need for continued learning and self-development. Occupational objectives include staff positions in a variety of health care settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, doctor's offices, clinics, industry, correctional institutions and care agencies.


Admission Sequence

If not already enrolled at SVCC, submit an application for admission, along with high school transcripts or proof of GED and transcripts of any previous college work. If enrolled, but have not taken classes for two or more years, submit an application for readmission to the college.


Admission Requirements

1. Have a high school diploma or GED.Achieve scores on the SVCC placement exam that exceed those for placement in developmental education courses, OR have successfully completed ENG 03, ENG 05, and MTH 02.Complete PN preadmission exam with an acceptable score.The student must pass a physical exam conducted by a healthcare provider.  First priority for admission will be given until four months prior to class starting to those applicants who are fully qualified and are residents of the College service area.Students who apply for one academic year and are not accepted for the program must reapply the next year for admission to the program.Students entering the nursing curriculum must be certified in CPR for the Health Care Provider.

2. The State Board of Nursing has the authority to deny licensure to any applicant who has violated any of the provisions of 54-367.32 of the Code of Virginia. Any student entering the nursing program who has committed any illegal offenses other than minor traffic violations should discuss these matters with the Nursing Program head prior to admission for clarification.
