SVCC falls, 97-89
The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team fell to 5-3 in the Virginia Community College System standings after dropping a 97-89 decision to Thomas Nelson CC on Saturday afternoon.
The loss dropped SVCC, the two-time defending VCCS state champions, to 8-7 on the season.
The Gators jumped out to an 18-13 lead but Damienne Drumgold-Seward and Cameron Staten drained long treys to close to 22-21 at the 10:20 mark of the first half.
A bucket by Markee Brooks at the 5:59 mark cut the Gators lead to 32-29 but Thomas Nelson closed the half on a 22-8 run to take a 54-37 lead to the halftime break.
SVCC refused to quit however and cut the Gators lead to 77-63 at the 7:23 mark of the second half on a bucket by Tre Person.
SVCC cut the deficit under ten with a minute left but could get no closer than eight.
Tre Person led SVCC with 21 points in the game while Markee Brooks scored 18 and Damienne Drumgold-Seward added 17.
Kierre Winfield also finished in double figures with 14 points.
SVCC will return home on Saturday to face Northern Virginia CC at 4 p.m. and welcome Germanna CC at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Both games will be played at Brunswick High School in Lawrenceville.
