SVCC Stages Big Comeback
The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team overcame a 67-46 halftime deficit to post a 102-90 win over Virginia Western CC on Saturday afternoon in Roanoke.
A red-hot shooting Virginia Western team came out on fire jumping out to a 30-15 lead.
SVCC fought back behind buckets from Tre Person and Markee Brooks to trim the lead to 38-30 at the 8:42 mark of the first half.
A trey by Brooks and two free throws by Person cut the Stars lead to 42-37 at the 6:02 mark but Virginia Western closed the half on a 25-9 run to take a commanding 67-46 lead to the halftime break.
The two-time defending VCCS state champions did not panic however and came out smoking to start the second half going on an incredible 21-0 run to knot the score at 67 on a free-throw by Brooks at the 10:41 mark..
SVCC took the lead for good at the 4:57 mark on a trey by Person as a big dunk by forward Jevon Lockett extended the SVCC lead to 84-82.
A 3-point play by Person gave SVCC a 93-82 lead with 2:11 left to play and the local team hit 5 of 6 from the charity stripe to seal the win.
Person led SVCC with a career-high 44 points and added 11 rebounds and six assists.
Brooks finished with 20 points and five rebounds while Lockett added 17 points and 22 rebounds.
C. J. Boyd scored seven points and added 12 rebounds for SVCC while point guard Marcus Williams scored eight points and added nine rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals.
The victory improved SVCC to 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the VCCS.
SVCC will complete their regular season with two home games this week, playing host to Tidewater CC on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. and Richard Bland CC at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Both games will be played at Brunswick High School in Lawrenceville.
