SVCC Wins a Pair

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team closed out the regular season in style picking up a pair of wins over the weekend.

Marcus Williams on DefenseSVCC downed Tidewater CC 80-77 on Saturday and followed that up with a 100-80 win over Richard Bland College on Sunday.

The two wins improved SVCC to 12-8 overall and 9-4 in the Virginia Community College System standings.

SVCC, the two-time defending VCCS state champions, will begin defense of its title on Friday at the VCCS state tournament in Chesapeake.

The local team got off to a hot start on Sunday as a 3-point play by Tre Person at the 17:04 mark of the first half gave SVCC an 8-2 lead.

Person knocked down a trey at the 11:31 mark and Kierre Winfield hit a bucket to extend the SVCC lead to 20-2.

Richard Bland fought back and closed the gap to 11 points but Markee Brooks scored 14 straight points and Marcus Williams added a trey at the buzzer to give SVCC a 51-36 halftime lead.

The local team extended their lead to 82-61 on a trey by Brooks at the 9:08 mark of the second half and cruised to the 100-80 win.

Brooks led SVCC with 24 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field while Javon Lockett added 19 points and six rebounds.

Kierre Winfield tallied 18 points with eight boards while Tre Person scored 15 points and Marcus Williams added 11 points and seven assists.

The local team overcame a 38-31 halftime deficit to post an 80-77 win over Tidewater CC on Saturday.

SVCC took its first lead of the second half on a jumper by Markee Brooks to take a 45-43 lead at the 13:33 mark.

Buckets by Tre Person and Marcus Williams gave SVCC a 51-45 lead at the 11:58 mark.

After a dunk by C. J. Boyd, TCC rallied to take a 59-57 lead at the 6:48 mark.
SVCC answered when Javon Lockett hit a bucket and Person hit four straight free-throws for a 63-60 lead at the 5:52 mark.

Brooks hit two big buckets down the stretch and hit two free throws with eight seconds left to seal the win.

Person led SVCC with 33 points on the night while Brooks scored 17 and Lockett added 10.
