New Business and Industry Career Readiness training offered at SVCC
Southside Virginia Community College will offer a new fast track training program at various locations this spring to prepare individuals for careers in business and industry. Completers will earn a career studies certificate in Business and Industry Career Readiness which includes 16 college credits on these topics: First Aid/CPR, basic computer skills, OSHA 10 hour in general industry, teambuilding, resume writing, interview skills, workplace ethics, industrial measurements, computer integrated manufacturing, and forklift training (or technical elective). Participants will attend this fast track training program full time for a short eight weeks beginning February 6, 2012.
Centers that are offering this program include Southside Virginia Education Center in Emporia, Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill, Estes Center in Chase City, Pickett Occ/Tech Center in Blackstone and Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston. John H. Daniel Campus in Keysville will begin this training program in May.
Participants will also take the CRC--Career Readiness Certificate assessment during this training. The CRC is a 3 hour assessment tool used to earn this Virginia Workforce Credential. The CRC will assess each individual’s level of job readiness in these three areas: reading for information, locating information and applied math. The CRC is scored at a level of Bronze, Silver or Gold. For more information about the CRC (Career Readiness Certificate), visit the web at http://crc.virginia.gov/
Participants who complete this career studies certificate and earn a CRC will be guaranteed an interview with the following organizations for vacancies for which they apply for and meet qualifications of the job vacancy: Georgia Pacific of Emporia, and Dollar General of South Boston, Home Care Industries of LaCrosse, BIT of Bracey and International Veneer of South Hill also embrace and recognize the value of this training program. Workforce Services at SVCC invites other business and industry in the area to embrace and recognize the value of this program also.
Participants must apply for financial aid through SVCC. Scholarships are available to cover the cost of tuition and CRC assessment through SVCC if participants are not eligible for financial aid and don’t have any other payment source.
