Capoeira Resistencia To Perform
Capoeira or "Dance of War" is approximately 400 years old with its roots in Africa. And a leading Capoeira school, Capoeira Resistencia, will bring a performance to the Workforce Development Center on the Christanna Campus on February 17th at 1:00 P.M. and on the Daniel Campus on the 16th.
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that came to Brazil by way of the slave trade in the 16th century.
In the slave quarters on plantations in Brazil, various cultures were forced to live together. As a result of this fusion many Afro-Brazilian folkloric arts and traditions were created. One of these traditions was Capoeira.
Capoeira is a martial art used by the slaves to free themselves and to flee from the plantations into the Quilombos (free African Societies), in the neighboring jungle that existed on the fringes of the cities, towns, and plantations. In the slavery period, Capoeira had to be disguised and completely kept secret for fear of persecution and penalty of death. In time, the art of Capoeira gained great respect in Brazil.
Today, Capoeira Resistencia is a Richmond, VA-based Capoeira school where Afro Brazilian music, dance and capoeira is taught and performed. Capoeira has been recognized as a Brazilian national sport since 1972 and Capoeira Resistencia is one of the leading proponents of Afro-Brazilian culture and capoeira on the east coast.
