Recruited to play in the south, Cavan attended Sunflower Junior College (now Mississippi Delta Community College) during 1957-1958. During his career there according to the college, he was an outstanding player on the basketball team as well as contributor on the track team. He averaged 24 points a game and led the Trojans basketball team in scoring, rebounding and assists even though he was almost always double-teamed. He was named to All State and inducted into the college’s Sports Hall of Fame.
He received numerous scholarship offers to four year schools including Seton Hall, Mississippi State, Western Kentucky and St. Francis in Brooklyn but kept a promise to Nicholls State University Coach Osburn and finished his college career there. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. While at Nicholls, one newspaper called Cavan ‘one of the most accurate shooters in the nation.’ Named All-Deep South, he also has been inducted into the Nicholls Athletic Hall of Fame.
A hero on and off the court, Cavan and another player, Max Smith, were credited with helping Coach Osburn’s wife and children out of a fire that swept through the athletic dormitory in Louisiana.
