Professor Emeritus Honored
Southside Virginia Community College recently named two new Professors Emeritus. These former faculty members are recommended by the SVCC Faculty Senate and must be approved by the college President and College Board. Nominees must have been full time faculty members for at least ten years. During a ceremony, Susan Legg Slayton and Dr. Al Yoder received this honor.
Slayton is a retired Associate Professor of English/Developmental Studies. She was widely respected and loved by her students, many of whom still remember her inspirational teaching methods. She taught almost every English and Reading class the college offers. She was hired at SVCC in 1978 and holds a Bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary and Master's degree from University of Virginia. She is married to Russell Slayton.
Dr. Yoder began his career at SVCC in 1972 when he was hired as Assistant Professor of English. In 1973 he became the Head of the Humanities Department and English Professor. He returned to faculty in 1976 and in 1978, he was named acting division Chair for Arts, Business and Science and a year later, was named the Division Chair. He was Director of Instruction from 1982 until 1986 when he became Division Chairperson. From 2002 until 2009 when he retired, Dr. Yoder was the Dean of Instruction. He holds a Bachelor's of Science degree from Wabash College, Master's in English from University of Indiana and Ph.D. in Humanities from Florida State University. He and his wife, Sharon, reside in Farmville.
