Robotics Team Wins Championship
The HPT dual enrollment program's "Southside Vexters Team 1851" won the overall championship at the Winter Hampton Roads Regional VEX Competition on Saturday December 10th. This team consisted of Kyle Johnson from Park View, Tra'von Previtire, also from Park View and Aaron Peebles from Brunswick. By winning the regional event, they automatically receive a bid to the 2012 World championship. The team formed an alliance with Team 1575C out of Woodbridge to form the championship team. They Swept the quarter finals and semi finals before winning the finals 2 to 1.
This team also won the Judges Award which was determined by innovation, team work, team spirit, perseverance, and sportsmanship. When one of judges was asked what qualified the team for that award, he said that in the judges opinion, that was the most important award there and that the team displayed qualities that VEX couldn't put a label on. He also said that our team was what every team aspired to be and that they represented our school and program well.
This was one of two Southside HPT robotic teams. The "Southside Vexters Team 1851B," our second team, finished in the top 8 (out of 49 teams). They formed an alliance with a team from Woodrow Wilson High School and did very well until getting knocked out in the quarter final round by the eventual champions-team 1851 alliance. This team consisted of Lewis Tucker- Lunenburg, Dalton Foley-Lunenburg, Christopher Cook-Lunenburg, and Derek Gonzalez-Lunenburg.
Both teams were excited and had a lot of fun especially after finding out that the competition was being played live on local fox and being streamed live via the internet. Many of them contacted their family and friends to have them watch.
Last year, our team finished 32nd out of 512 teams in the World Championship.
