Meet New Employee - Sue Cox

Although Sue Cox is a fairly new full time employee at Southside Virginia Community College, she has been a part of the college for many years.

sue coxBefore coming to SVCC, she was employed as office manager at Kenbridge Sportswear for almost 20 years.  When the manufacturer closed in March 1992 due to out-sourcing overseas in the global economy, Cox had the opportunity to further her education.  In Fall 1992, she enrolled as a full-time student in a Business Administration Program graduating with an A.A.S. Degree in Business Administration in 1995.

Even though she faced the tough loss of her job, she said “I feel that I was so fortunate to have had the opportunity to pursue my education.  I was the first in my family to succeed with a college degree. “

“I thought that I could not afford to go to college but I found out that the opportunity was there.  I took the opportunity and followed my dream.  I am so thankful for this event in my life,” she noted, reiterating the possibility that many find at SVCC.

Employed as a temporary employee at the college bookstore while attending classes, Cox was hired as a permanent part-time employee in 2003 and in November 2010,  was hired as a full-time Retail Specialist I employee.  She works on both Christanna and John H. Daniel campuses in the bookstore.

“ I enjoy my contacts and being able to serve the students.  My greatest joy is to seeing the students achieve their goals, “she said.

Born in Virginia, she is married to Harris Cox and they have two sons, Steve and Michael (deceased.)  They have two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and reside in Dundas, Virginia.
