SVCC Team Wins VEX Robotics Competition
A team of Students in the High Performance Technology dual enrollment program at Southside Virginia Community College recently won the overall competition in the state VEX robotics competition at Liberty University. SVCC had two teams in the contest.
Team 1851 consisted of Kiana Byrd (Bluestone), Nick DeTiere (Park View), Sam Gill (Park View), Arsenio Key (Brunswick) and Vintrell Brown (Brunswick).
Team 1851B consisted of Ryan Hare (Lunenburg), James Bowen (Brunswick), Dillon Clary (Brunswick) and Chris Watson (Brunswick).
Team 1851B "Southside VEXsters" won the overall competition. After qualifying 5th, the team made some adjustments and formed an alliance with the 6th place qualifying team (Gar-Field High School) to win 1st overall.
In forming an Alliance, the strategy was to select a good defensive team as team 1851B was the best offensive team in the competition. Gar-Field High School proved to be just that. Tied at 1 to 1, in a best of 3 final, Gar-Field High School removed 5 of the competitor's 7 rings as Team 1851B scored 5 rings to win the competition by 4 points.
By winning the Liberty competition, Team 1851B won a $750.00 entrance to the World VEX competition in Orlando Florida. Each team member also received a $100.00 Best Buy gift card.
Team 1851B also won the Create award. This award was given to the team that displayed the best in engineering principles.
Team 1851 also competed well but got knocked out in the quarter finals and finished 8th out 26 teams.

Both teams competed well and will be combined to represent SVCC at the World competition in Orlando Florida.
