Roberts Receives Excellence in Education Award
“Dr. Roberts is a person whose leadership and dedication inspires a love of learning in his counterparts and the students at Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC)” is one way Dr. Al Roberts, SVCC Provost, was described in the nomination for a recent award. Dr. Roberts is the recipient of the Virginia Community Colleges Association’s Excellence in Education Award for 2012.
Nominees were accepted from across the state of Virginia representing those who have worked and dedicated themselves to the community college experience. At SVCC, Dr. Roberts has served in the capacities of Student Support Services, Director of the Campus Without Walls, Dean of Off-Campus Instruction, Vice President of Workforce Services and Continuing Education and Provost on both the John H. Daniel Campus and now, the Christanna Campus.
A native of Emporia, Dr. Roberts has worked with at-risk youth in the area. He served as the Director of the Community Youth Center, Inc., in Emporia and completed his dissertation on Institutional Factors Supporting the Enrollment and Persistence of African American Males in the VCCS.
With a passion for education and an advocate that education opens doors, Dr. Roberts completed a B.A. in Mass Communications, M.E.D. in Educational Media and Ph.D. in Community College Leadership. He recently completed the Institute for Educational Management Certificate from Harvard Graduate School of Education.
