SVCC Men Win VCCS Opener

 

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s intercollegiate basketball team earned a 92-86 win over Tidewater Community College in their Virginia Community College System conference opener on Friday night.

SVCC could not keep the momentum going on the road Saturday afternoon however dropping a hard-fought 92-89 decision to Thomas Nelson Community College at the Boo Williams Sports Complex in Hampton.

The loss dropped SVCC to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the VCCS.

“It is always tough playing on the road in the VCCS,” said SVCC coach Dennis Smith. “Our young men played hard but we just didn’t finish on Saturday. We will look forward to coming back strong after the holiday break.”

Tyree WilliamsSVCC went to the halftime break down 49-38 on Friday night but answered with a 10-0 run to cut the lead to one on Kevin House’s lay-up at the 15:32 mark of the second half.

The two teams battled down the stretch but two straight buckets by Tyree Williams cut the Storms’ lead to 60-59 at the 11:07 mark.

Two tip-ins by A. J. Fowlkes and a pair of free throws from Eric Wulff gave SVCC a 69-67 lead with 6:47 left in the game.

A dunk by Fowlkes and a lay-up by Dwyane Cypress gave SVCC a 75-72 lead at the 5:12 mark.

Three straight buckets by Fowlkes, who played the second half with four fouls, extended the SVCC lead to 87-81 with 1:29 left to play.

SVCC hit 6 of 8 from the charity stripe over the last two minutes of the game to seal the win.

Tyree Williams (Brunswick HS) led SVCC with 33 points while A. J. Fowlkes (Prince Edward HS) scored 30.

Kevin House (Park View HS) scored 13 for SVCC while Eric Wulff (Kenston Forest HS) added 10 point and 10 rebounds.

Cypress also added eight rebounds in the win.

TNCC, 92-89

SVCC fell behind 45-36 to Thomas Nelson Community College at the halftime break on Saturday afternoon but rallied to knot the score at 74 in the second half on back-to-back treys by Dion Robinson (Cumberland HS).

A 6-0 run by the Gators gave them an 80-74 lead but Williams scored on two consecutive lay-ups to cut the lead to 80-78 at the 3:40 mark.

A Williams' lay-up with 13 seconds left cut the TNCC lead to 90-87 but the Gators got a rebound following a missed free-throw and held on for the 92-89 win.

Williams led SVCC with 30 points in the game while Fowlkes scored 20 and Dwayne Cypress (Park View HS) added 11.
