Telecommunications Technology career studies certificate program offered at Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center
SVCC in partnership with BIT Communications (aka Buggs Island Telephone Cooperative) of Bracey, Virginia is proud to be offering a new career studies certificate program in telecommunications technology. This program was created in order to address the growing need for skilled telecommunication professionals in the Southside Virginia community.
Students who successfully complete the 24 credit hour program will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand how today’s complex telecommunication networks operate. In addition to gaining vital knowledge and skills, students completing this program will be immediately ready to enter the workforce and contribute to building and operating the telecommunication networks of tomorrow.
This program offers students many unique opportunities. The greatest advantage students will receive is being able to work with a live telecommunication network by taking advantage of SVCC’s partnership with BIT. This partnership will allow students to see, experience, and work with real world technology while gaining hands-on practical experience. This experience will be the equivalent of the types of networks they will encounter when they become employed by a network service provider. Furthermore, BIT will offer its trained staff to provide in depth knowledge and hands on training for many of the classes in the program.
Students can expect to gain the following skills and experiences from the program:
- Networking standards and popular networking protocols
- Training in the use of bridges, routers, switches, and broadband technologies
- Network Management best practices and training
- Network Administration for wireline and wireless networks
- Telecommunication system installation and repair
- Network Security
- Project Management
BIT will also be expanding its network across Southside Virginia and will have a large demand for skilled network professionals that are trained and ready to immediately make a positive contribution to the company’s goals and mission.
According to Zeb Elliott, BIT’s Chief Technology Officer, “This partnership between SVCC and BIT is a great opportunity for BIT because it allows us to have access to a readily trained workforce to fulfill our projected workforce needs as we continue to expand our network. Due to BIT expanding its broadband network out across Southside Virginia, we will have several network and information technology positions that will require the skills that this certificate program offers.”
This program will primarily focus on providing students with the latest information and skills on current technology as well as preparing them for the dynamic and changing environment that the telecommunications industry constantly faces. Students will learn to adapt quickly, make smart technology choices, and learn how information and telecommunication technology can be utilized to create a competitive advantage for businesses in today’s tough economy.
Students who satisfactorily complete this program will be prepared for employment as a network technician, network planner, network administrator, IT specialist, network manager, and computer technician. This program also aligns with many popular industry certifications including A+, Network + and CISSP. For more information visit
